Join in the fun
The joy of a canal boat holiday is relaxing on board as the scenery glides peacefully by, but it doesn’t have to be like that. We encourage our guests to participate in activities on board and around the places we visit during the trip. The boats we use are specially adapted to allow you to get as involved as you like in everything we do. You can be part of the crew and even take the tiller, if you would like to.
Please note that, while we try our best to let you join in with everything, not all activities are suitable for everyone or available on every trip. Here’s a selection of ideas though and we’re sure you can think of lots of other ways to make this the holiday of your dreams.
Running the boat
Helping with morning and evening engine checks
Helping with locks – this can take many forms from helping to operate the gates and paddle gear to holding onto ropes
Helping with cleaning and tidying up.
Helping with catering
Preparing food – everything from peeling potatoes to cooking Sunday lunch
Laying the table
Washing up – always has to be done unless you eat out all the time!
Preparing drinks – why is it that everyone is always thirsty?
On board recreation
Board and other games – most of the boats carry a few old favourites and you are welcome to bring your own
Art and craft work
Watching the world go by
Birdwatching – there is a good selection of birds on the rivers, heron are common and you may also spot a kingfisher from time to time
Cook’s night off
Catering on our trips is expertly handled by our enthusiastic catering volunteers. The style of catering depends on the person on board but the standard is always good. Some nights may be organised to minimise the catering work by bringing in a take away or organising a barbeque.
Where possible we indulge in off boat activities such as theatre visits, ten pin bowling and anything else that may be going on locally. Sometimes we even visit the pub!
